CHAPTER 12

After nearly two hours of weaving her way around traffic, meandering through places she’d never even heard of, Samira finally made it home. Now she was in the living room while her mum was making a late lunch and a coffee in the kitchen. Their usual for whenever Anwar was out of the house.

Business as usual. Like nothing had happened.

As soon as the kettle finished its boil, Samira lifted herself off the sofa and poured the water into their mugs of instant coffee. Then she took them into the living room and waited until her mum joined her. On the TV, BBC News played. Images of London rolled across the screen. The skyscrapers. The flashing lights of police cars and ambulances. The thin trail of smoke that covered the sky…

The terror and turmoil…

Nadra placed Samira’s plate of food on the coffee table in the centre of the room. ‘Lunch is served.’

‘I’ll enjoy it more when I know he’s dead.’

‘You’re welcome.’

‘Thank you. Sorry.’ Samira grabbed her plate and took a mouthful of her sandwich. Her taste buds delighted as the butter melted on her tongue. ‘What happened to him? What did you see? Are you sure he got caught in the explosion?’

‘I’ve told you.’

‘Tell me again.’

‘Anwar gave the package back to Abdullah before you detonated. He started running round the corner, and then he fell to the ground. He knocked into someone. They weren’t moving after the explosion.’

‘You’re sure? You’re sure you didn’t see him move? You’re sure he didn’t survive?’ Samira placed the sandwich back on the plate. She wasn’t in the mood to eat.

‘I don’t know,’ said Nadra. ‘I’m telling you all that I saw. There is nothing we can do about it now. We’ll have to wait for the news to report.’

‘And what are we going to do in the meantime?’

‘Wait. Acting hastily will only draw more attention to us.’

‘And if he wakes up? If he is alive?’

Nadra sipped her coffee, returned the mug to a coaster which had a brown ring on it and looked at Samira. ‘We kill him again.’
